Two weeks earlier, when we spent almost three hours together on her 31-acre spread in the unincorporated Hill Country town of Utopia, she’d sneaked in a few barbs. This was not my first experience being insulted by the best-selling author of western novels. Before she signed off-“Sorry about that but it just isn’t working for me”-she also let me know she’d read some of my work online and had come away less than impressed. She was responding to my request to ask her a few follow-up questions, and this was her characteristically caustic way of saying no. “This was the first time I was interviewed about a new book by somebody who hated writing and didn’t read books until recently,” Paulette Jiles wrote me via email on January 30. ![]() ![]() ![]() Paige must navigate her relationship with Savannah, and her struggles to protect and care for the young half-demon highlight the complexities of motherhood and the importance of family. This theme is explored in a way that is both thought-provoking and emotionally resonant, as Paige and the other characters struggle to come to terms with their place in this world.Īnother theme that is explored in the book is the idea of family, both biological and chosen. Paige must navigate a world where powerful sorcerers and other supernatural beings can control and manipulate others, often with little regard for the consequences. One of the major themes of Dime Store Magic is the power dynamics that exist in the supernatural world. The supporting cast is also well-crafted, with the coven members and other supernatural beings adding depth and complexity to the story. Savannah, too, is a well-drawn character, with her half-demon heritage adding an interesting and unique twist to the story. Paige is a strong and capable protagonist, and her struggles to balance her leadership role with her personal life make her relatable and engaging. Over the past century, many viewers have asked: who was Adele Bloch-Bauer?īloch-Bauer was born Adele Bauer in Vienna in 1881. The painting later became an icon of justice – the 2015 film Woman in Gold is the Hollywood version of the tale of the painting’s confiscation from the Jewish Bloch-Bauer family during World War Two and the long but ultimately successful struggle for restitution by Bloch-Bauer’s niece Maria Altmann. WELL, by Riordan’s logic, I NEEDED to give you all of that information before I get into the meat of the review. ![]() ![]() ![]() But why would you care about all of that? You are hear to read my review of this specific short story. It explains the many years of my life where I have read the Percy Jackson series. Now, what does any of that backstory have to do with my review of this book? Yes, it does explain how I got to reading this book. Somewhere along that line, I read the first book of this crossover series, and then when I saw this was available in my digital library recently, I decided to finish it. That’s when I realized I didn’t love the PJO series that much, even though I did love the characters. I had read some of the PJO books before, and had watched the movie, but I decided to finish the PJO series last year in order to get through the Heroes of Olympus series. The way the book occupied my mind so much was just enough for me to relax and actually rest. I listened to the audiobooks for the next two books as I went to sleep at night, it was one of the most fun ways to go to sleep. One day I was in the library and I saw Red Pyramid and thought it was a really good book when I read it. This short story is a cross between the Percy Jackson books and The Kane Chronicles, two series that I really enjoy! Even though I don’t love all the Percy Jackson books, I did love the Kane Chronicles when I read them in middle school. ![]() |
